Built in the backyard of a home in the hills above Waikanae, Carl Vasta was an engineer with intrigued tastebuds and a healthy dose of Kiwi ingenuity in his blood. He was soon brewing a range of ales, porters and pilsner, and thus Tuatara was born. The name Tuatara comes from the New Zealand reptile whose origins date back to prehistoric times and has an impressive 60 year life span. The bottles are designed to imitate the back of the tuatara and the company donates to the Tuatara preservation efforts at Wellington's Zealandia conservation centre. Tuatara strives to brew true to style so will research origins and methods to ensure what is bottled is true to form and this has paid off with a firm place in the New Zealand craft beer market and a small but growing place in the global market.
