Black EstateBuy from this producer
Black Estate is a family owned and organic producer in Waipara, North Canterbury. The family owns three north-facing hillside vineyards with clay and a diverse range of limestone soils. Each vineyard is unique and carefully managed with intense handwork and care, specific to the nature to each site. Black Estate wish to capture the truest expression of each site's character in the bottle so to make wine that is truly original and memorable. Nicholas' winemaking is gentle and guiding. His wines are inoculated with yeast collected from the vineyard specific to the fruit - so to get a closer and real expression of the season and the vineyard. The wines are not fined and the Pinot Noirs and Cabernet Franc are not filtered. Minimal inputs are used with the winemaking. The family purchased the Black Estate Home vineyard in 2007 from its founder Russell Black (planted in 1994). In 2010 Black Estate won the IWSC trophy for Pinot Noir confirming the family's belief in the Home Vineyard. Since then two more vineyards, Damsteep and Netherwood were acquired within 10km of each other and a new block at the Home Vineyard was planted with more Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and small parcels of Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc. The Damsteep Vineyard was planted in 1999 with Riesling and Pinot Noir and the Netherwood, planted in 1986 by Russell Black and Daniel Schuster grows Pinot Noir and a little Chardonnay. Nicholas believes these five varieties suit the clay and limestone soils of the sub-region and the cool climate surrounding it. All vineyards are managed organically and with biodynamics and Black Estate is now in year 2 of conversion with Bio Gro.
The Black Estate Tasting Room and Restaurant is renowned for its design, views and food and is a must visit when in New Zealand. The building looks out over the Home Vineyard across to the mountains and is the perfect place to meet the people of Black Estate, see the vineyards in action and enjoy local and organic food.
